Storms to Continue Flash Flooding, Hail Threat in Texas

The risk of localized flash flooding and thunderstorms capable of producing large hail and strong wind gusts will continue over part of Texas and Louisiana into Friday night.
The storms can disrupt travel and outdoor activities.
According to Southern Weather Expert Dan Kottlowski, "While the storms are isolated, some locations will be hit by multiple storms, raising concerns for flash and urban flooding."

The storms are igniting along the tail end of a front advancing slowly across the Central states.
Moisture continues to stream in from the Gulf of Mexico ahead of the front, boosting the risk for torrential rainfall.
"A small number of the storms will also bring large hail and damaging wind gusts," Kottlowski said.
Major cities that can be impacted by the storms include San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, Beaumont and College Station in Texas, as well as Lake Charles, Alexandria, Baton Rouge and New Orleans in Louisiana.

While the rainfall can cause localized problems in the short term, much of the region is projected to have building drought this summer.
"Any rainfall the area gets now may help the region later on this summer as we expect drought conditions to shift into the region during the hottest part of the year," Kottlowski said.
Another opportunity for drenching rainfall and the risk of severe weather may develop over portions of central and coastal Texas later Sunday into Monday night.
