Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday,March 4,2014
An active weather system moved across the western Gulf Coast on Tuesday,
while a frontal boundary extended across the Intermountain West and the
Plains.
An onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico triggered stormy weather along
the western Gulf Coast on Tuesday. Winter weather advisories were issued
in eastern Texas, Louisiana and western Mississippi as thunderstorms
produced a mixture of rain, freezing rain and sleet. Kendall, Texas,
reported a midday total of 0.50 inches of hail, while Jefferson Davis,
Miss., reported a midday total of 0.03 inches of freezing rain. Winter
weather advisories were also issued in the upper Midwest as a swath of
snow showers moved across North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and
Iowa. Stark, N.D., reported a midday total of 1.6 inches of snow, while
Aitkins, Minn., reported a midday total of 2.5 inches of snow.
Light to moderate snow showers also pushed across the Great Lakes and
the Northeast on Tuesday. To the south, rain and freezing rain lingered
over part of eastern North Carolina as winter weather advisories were
issued across the area.
Out west, an onshore flow from the Pacific ushered rainy weather over
Washington and northern Oregon. Shelton, Wash., reported a midday total
of 0.91 inches of rain. This system also brought high elevation
scattered snow showers to the Cascades and the northern Rockies. High
pressure over California kept the majority of the Southwest clear of
precipitation.
