Major Snowstorm Looms for DC, Philly, Richmond

By , Senior Meteorologist
March 2,2014; 5:44PM,EST

A far-reaching winter storm with substantial snow and ice continues to track from the Plains to the mid-Atlantic.
This will remain a complex winter storm with plunging temperatures setting the stage for treacherous ice and substantial snow. In some cases, the ice and snow are following a period of rain and even violent thunderstorms.
Fresh arctic air pouring into the Northeast this Sunday will spare places from I-80 northward in the Northeast from the worst of the snowstorm. At most, 1 to 3 inches will graze southern New England and New York City.
AccuWeather.com meteorologists have determined that the heaviest snow will instead focus on the mid-Atlantic from the mountains of West Virginia to northern and central Virginia and southern New Jersey Sunday night through Monday.

Washington, D.C., Harrisonburg, Va., Philadelphia, Dover, Del., and Atlantic City, N.J., are bracing for substantial snowfall that will total 6 to 12 inches. Some places will even see amounts top a foot.
Snowfall rates at the height of the storm may reach 2 inches per hour, causing the snow to quickly clog major interstates.

Commuters will face extremely treacherous travel, along with lengthy flight delays and cancellations on Monday. Residents will be dealing with more disruptions to daily routines and school cancellations.
The impending snowstorm will come despite a mild end to the weekend across the mid-Atlantic with rain falling. Any wet roads or sidewalks will rapidly freeze as colder air arrives and the rain transitions to a period of ice, then the heavy snow.

Evident by the icy conditions that unfolded around Dallas earlier Sunday, arctic air is having no trouble pressing farther south than previously anticipated and AccuWeather.com is concerned for rain changing to a glaze of ice as far south as Florence, S.C., and Charlotte, N.C., later Monday.
Bridges and overpasses would be the first to turn icy, and snowflakes could even bring the ice to an end in Raleigh, N.C.

The concern for treacherous ice has also shifted southward west of the Appalachians. Nashville must now brace for the ice storm that is threatening to put Little Rock and Jonesboro, Ark., Memphis, Tenn., and Lexington, Ky., in the dark.
Invading colder air will cause rain to end as ice or lead to a rapid freeze up southward to northern Louisiana and northern Mississippi Sunday night.
As the ice unfolds over these communities Sunday night, more of the southern and central Plains will have to deal with snow and an icy mix.

I have never been more irritated in my life then I am right now with accuweather and their forecasts. You guys cant predict the forecast 10 minutes ahead of time. I have been watching this the whole weekend and it went from 12-18 inches to 1-3.. its ridiculous all the hype you do to people and change your minds. A lab rat can do your job better. Ive had enough of following the weather with you.

I am told by my parents they predicted storms much better many years ago, without computers and by using maps!! progress??? don't think so!

Ashley Carter I can better predict my weather by looking outside my window.... and yes the weather predictions were better 30 years ago than they are today. Its ridiculous only way is to look outside your window and thats how I know what the weather will be

Ashley Carter We didn't have climate change and the weather extremes that have upset our normal weather patterns back then. Computers deal with normal weather events and probabilities. Now, all bets are off.

I agree with Michael Khleb. This is ridiculous. I live on long island, ny and been tracking this storm for the last few days and its amazing how wrong "AccuWeather" is. I understand predicting weather is very difficult especially snowstorms. But please do us all a favor and DO NOT give accumulation predictions days before because they are ALWAYS wrong. Always!! What makes it worse is that you guys tout how accurate you are and you are not! Computer models are never accurate until the storm is actually on us. So what good are they than. Too much emphasis is put on them as opposed to good old fashion weather forecasting which a forgone talent/profession.Your radar is always wrong too if that's possible. When its raining it shows its snowing and vice versa. Uninstalled your weather app and now will not be following AccuWeather.com as well. Thank God i didnt change my plans for Monday!! Good riddance.

Kristina Pydynowski, why did you remove the Winter Tab when it is still astronomical winter until the 16th. You wrote an article about a winter storm that will impact 1300 miles of maybe a foot of snow! Where is your focal point? People's lives are at stake and people have died due to poor, long-range weather forecasts!

I am pretty angry myself. I was depending on accuweather to give me an accurate timeline for snow. I missed an important family event because you predicted snow to intensify. I rush home just to see I could have made the event the whole time. I really think this was something you could have foreseen for longer then 4 hours ahead of time.

This will be the first time I will ever welcome an incoming cold front! it is pushing all the heavy snow that had been predicted near NYC southward!

If I was so incorrect at my job as the weather people often are, I would be fired... I can't use the excuse " A SHIFT IN THE WIND DIRECTION" Aaron.

Talk about over hype, cincy went from 6-12 to 1-3 every weather station has done this, we need some better forecasters.

Unless the map is incorrectly drawn, Philly does not lie in this zone. According to the map, it's in the 3-6 zone.

All the forecasters in Philly ,Pa are calling for 6 to 12
    • Lawrence P. Bansbach · Top Commenter
Robin Bead, nope. NBC10 says 6-8", CBS3 6-8", Fox29 6-9", 6ABC 8-12" (which they haven't adjusted much despite the southward trend in the models).
    • Jimson C. Cuenta · Top Commenter · Burlington County College
For what it's worth, the NWS has Philly at 8.0 inches, Wilmington at 8.1 inches, Baltimore at 6.6 inches, and Washington DC at 7.8 inches. The NWS has the snow jackpot somewhere to the south and east of Philadelphia, as they have Atlantic City at 10.0 inches.
    • Lawrence P. Bansbach · Top Commenter
      Jimson C. Cuenta, NWS 4-8" for Philly, NBC10 now 4-7", 6ABC now 3-6".

Lawrence P. Bansbach Hello again-I guess by about 3pm on monday we will know how many inches, It looks like the city is ready-with food, etc.Take care,be happy

Robin Bead, the way it's shaping up (knock wood), the storm might be largely over by noon.
