Atlanta Battles Major Ice Storm Through Midweek

An ice storm is underway in Atlanta, threatening the area with dangerous travel and potential power outages through midweek.
While heavy snow will fall north of Atlanta, it will not be snow that will threaten to bring the city to a halt at midweek but sleet and freezing rain from a prolonged wintry weather event for the South.
The storm began as rain late Monday night.
Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for more than 40 Georgia counties on Monday night ahead of the storm.
As colder air works in farther south across the Atlanta area, the rain will mix with then change to sleet and freezing rain late Tuesday.
Public schools in the area closed on Tuesday and Wednesday in anticipation of harsh conditions.

The ice is expected to continue through Wednesday, leading to extremely hazardous travel and potential power outages.
As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 700 flights had been canceled or delayed at Atlanta International.
Snow will fall over northernmost Georgia and the southern Appalachians during much of the storm.

Officials may be forced to close roads and interstates if conditions become too dangerous for motorists. Airline passengers should prepare for possible lengthy delays and flight cancellations, as hundreds of cancellations mounted Tuesday morning.
The good news is that milder air will quickly follow this winter storm. Highs in the 50s are expected for Thursday and Friday.

The weekend will follow suite, reaching into the 60s Saturday and Sunday.
A major warmup will take place next week lasting through the week and into mid February.
