WeatherFanatics: A Bit Of Relief For England, Scotland

Over the next few days, the storm-weary residents of England and Scotland will start to see a bit of relief from the constant barrage of storms. However, there will still be a bit of rain over the next week.
Rainfall over the past several days and weeks have brought some significant flooding for parts of the United Kingdom. This flooding has caused many problems, including lack of garbage removal due to the flood waters and increased rat populations in some of the hardest hit areas.
Just in February, nearly 3 inches (7.5 cm) of rain has fallen, or roughly 180 percent of normal rainfall for the entire month of February. This, combined with the rainfall in January, has amounted to over 300 percent of normal rainfall for 2014 so far, or 8.8 inches (22 cm).

This flooding has come as storm after storm has brought strong winds to Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom. A strong wind storm just this past week brought wind gusts in London of over 50 mph Friday and wind gusts to over hurricane force in western parts of England.
These numbers alone are impressive, but even more rain fell in Bristol, England. Over 15 inches (38 cm) of rain has fallen from the start of 2014, and with their average yearly rainfall of 33 inches (84 cm), this is just shy of 50 percent of their normal rainfall for the entire year.
Over the next week, we are looking to turn much drier over the area, but not completely dry. A storm moves through Monday night into Tuesday, and another storm pushes through Wednesday night into Thursday, but these storms look to be weakening when they move through and bring under an inch or rainfall total for both storms.

The flooding in parts of the United Kingdom is so severe that even a few showers could bring additional flooding. The worst of the flooding is focused over central England and into Wales, but even the minor rainfall will be a welcome change from the heavy rainfall that has been seen the past few months.
Looking even further ahead, a strong high pressure looks to take control over the United Kingdom for the end of the week and into the weekend. The region may finally see some relief from the rainfall over the past months.
