A cold frontal boundary extended from the central Great Lakes to the
western Gulf Coast, while an arctic air mass continued to impact the
north central portion of the country.
Wind chill warnings were issued across a handful of states on Sunday as a
high pressure system pushed an arctic air mass across the northern tier
of the country. Temperatures ranged between 30 to 50 degrees below
normal from the northern Plains to the upper Mississippi Valley. Crane
Lake, Minn., recorded a morning low of -38 degrees, while Park Rapids,
Minn., recorded a morning low of -33 degrees with a wind chill factor of
-54 degrees. Meanwhile, a cold front stretched from southern Texas to
central Michigan, which was accompanied by rain and snow. A swath of
snow showers moved across Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin,
Michigan and Ohio, while spottier show showers lingered in Kansas,
Oklahoma and Arkansas. Chicago, Ill., reported a midday total of 5.0
inches of snow, while Van Buren, Mich., reported a midday total of 9.0
inches of snow. Rain accompanied the southern end of the front, which
impacted parts of the lower Mississippi Valley and the Missouri Valley
on Sunday.
Along the Eastern Seaboard, scattered snow showers fell in northern New
England, while sleet and rain moved across the Mid-Atlantic.
The West Coast stayed mostly clear of precipitation on as a ridge of high pressure continued to build over the eastern Pacific.
