Snowfall Forecast: Northeast

Snowfall Forecast: Northeast
Snow will continue to fall in portions of the Northeast into the overnight hours Saturday, including BuffaloState College, Pa., Albany, N.Y.Hartford and Boston.
(FORECAST: Boston | New York | Washington, D.C. | Philadelphia)
Saturday night into early Sunday as low pressure intensifies along or near the Northeast coast, the snow will change over to a wintry mix and eventually a cold rain from southern New Jersey, into the New York City metro area, and parts of southeast New England.
Even west of I-95, the snow is expected to change to sleet and freezing rain from the lower Hudson Valley to northern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Fortunately, we're not expecting major ice accumulations. That said, some icing of trees, bridges and overpasses is expected.
Meanwhile, snow, heavy at times, will fall Saturday night from central Pennsylvania, into Upstate New York and New England.
(FORECAST: Scranton, Pa. | Albany, N.Y. | Concord, N.H.)
Sunday, heavier snow will linger over New England and northern New York, particularly in the morning, before shifting north and tapering off in the afternoon and evening. Precipitation will have ended shortly after sunrise Sunday in most locations from New York City to Scranton, Pa. southward.
In addition, low pressure will be developing south of New England and tracking northeast during this time. While the low is not expected to be an especially intense coastal storm, some areas of reduced visibility in blowing and drifting snow can be expected in northern New England and Upstate New York by Sunday.
(FORECAST: Syracuse, N.Y. | Burlington, Vt. | Caribou, Maine)
By Sunday evening the bulk of the precipitation should be over, moving into Canada and offshore. A few lingering snow showers can't be ruled out mainly in northern Maine.
Winter Storm Central
The heaviest total snowfall, on the order of 8 inches or more, is most likely from northern Pennsylvania to much of New York into New England from northern and western Massachusetts west and north of Downtown Boston into Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Local amounts over a foot are possible in these areas.
In New York City, we expect snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches. How quickly the snow changes to a wintry mix and rain will determine whether totals are on the lower or higher end of this range. Total snowfall of 5 to 8 inches is expected in Boston before any change to mixed precipitation or rain early Sunday. The usual sharp snowfall gradients will be in play in both these cities with the heavier totals north and west of the city centers.
Farther south, lighter snowfall amounts are expected in Philadelphia (most in northern suburbs).
