A ripple of low pressure systems trekked across the eastern third of the
country on Sunday, while a high pressure system over the Great Basin
initiated a Santa Ana wind event along the West Coast.
A strong low pressure system propagated across the Northeast on Sunday.
This system packed rain, sleet and snow, which impacted a handful of
states throughout the day. Buckhannon, W.Va., reported a midday total of
8.17 inches of snow, while Coatesville, P.A., reported a midday total
of 5.01 inches of snow. This system also provided snow showers to parts
of the central Plains and upper Midwest on Sunday.
To the south, a separate area of low pressure pushed across the
Southeast, which brought showers and thunderstorms to a number of
states. The heaviest rain fell in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, as
Opelousas St Landry Parish, L.A., reported a midday total of 2.69
inches of rain, and Brookhaven, Miss., reported a midday total of 2.03
inches of rain.
Meanwhile, an area of high pressure over the Great Basin triggered
offshore winds across California, while a cold, arctic air mass kept
temperatures below normal over the West Coast and the Intermountain
West. Hard freeze warnings were also issued across the Central Valley of
California and into the desert Southwest on Sunday.
