A cold frontal boundary pushed across the Southwest on Saturday, while a separate cold front moved over the Southeast.
Hard freeze warnings and winter storm warnings were issued across
California and Nevada as a cold front moved southward over the two
states. Moderate to heavy snow fell in the Sierra Nevadas, while showers
spread across central and southern California. Mariposa, Calif.,
reported a midday total of 12.0 inches of snow, while Placer, Calif.,
reported a midday total of 16.0 inches of snow. Tehachapi, Calif., also
reported a midday total of 4.64 inches of precipitation on Saturday.
A separate frontal boundary stretched across the Intermountain West,
which brought frigid temperatures, gusty winds and light to moderate
snowfall to the Rockies. Eagle, Colo., reported a midday total of 1.3
inches of snow, while Copper Mountain, Colo., reported wind speeds of 58
mph. The upper Intermountain West, the northern Plains and the upper
Midwest experienced the coldest temperatures on Saturday as a result of
an arctic air mass. Havre, Mont., recorded a morning low of -39 degrees
with a windchill factor of -59 degrees, while Aberdeen, S.D., recorded a
morning low of -27 degrees with a windchill factor of -47 degrees.
Along the East Coast, a cold front moved across the Southeast, which
provided showers and thunderstorms to Georgia and the Carolinas. Parts
of the Northeast also experienced snow showers on Saturday.
