A strong winter storm brought heavy snow to the northern Plains and
upper Midwest on Wednesday, while freezing rain developed along the
leading edge of this system over the Great Lakes. A broad low pressure
system moved over the north-central U.S. and brought cold temperatures
in from Canada. This allowed for snow showers to spread from the Dakotas
towards the Great Lakes, with periods of mixed rain and snow showers,
as well as freezing rain showers, to develop along the eastern edge of
this system as it approached the Great Lakes. Snowfall accumulation for
Wednesday surpassed 10 inches by midday on Wednesday. Holyoke, Minnesota
reported a midday total of 13.7 inches of snow and 14.9 inches reported
just northeast of Finland, Minnesota. Most of the heavy snowfall
remained north of the Minneapolis Metropolitan area, with reports of 4.2
inches of snow at Maple Grove, Minnesota and 3 inches reported at
Minnetonka, Minnesota. The back side of this system brought cold arctic
air into the Western states with overnight low temperatures well below
zero. The national low was reported at Driggs, Idaho with an overnight
low of 23 degrees below zero, while many locations in Wyoming and
Montana with lows in the negative teens.
Meanwhile in the Southwest, another low pressure system moved over the
Four Corners and brought heavy snow to Colorado and lighter snow to
parts of northern Arizona and New Mexico. Baily, Colorado reported a
midday total of 10.5 inches of snow, Allenspark, Colorado reported a
midday total of 11 inches of snow, and Meeker, Colorado reported a
midday total of 12 inches of rain.
