A pair of cold fronts moved across the western and northern portions of
the country on Tuesday, while a warm, muggy air mass pushed onshore from
the Gulf of Mexico.
Winter weather advisories and hard freeze warnings were issued across
the western third of the country on Tuesday as a cold front ushered an
arctic air mass over the region. Below average temperatures swept across
the West Coast, the Great Basin and the Intermountain West, especially
behind the frontal boundary. Moderate to heavy snow fell in the Sierra
Nevadas, across the Great Basin and into the central Rockies. Washoe,
Nev., recorded a midday total of 8.50 inches of snow, while Lyon, Nev.,
recorded a midday total of 4.0 inches of snow.
Meanwhile, winter storms warnings and wind chill advisories were issued
across the upper Intermountain West, the northern Plains and the upper
Midwest as a separate cold front propagated over the region. Stanley,
Id., reported a morning low of -4 degrees with a windchill factor of -17
degrees, while Butte, Mont., reported a morning low of 1 degree. Heavy
snow fell in a handful of states, as Bowman, N.D., reported a midday
total of 5.0 inches of snow, while Potter, S.D., reported a midday total
of 2.50 inches of snow.
Parts of the Southeast experienced showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday
as a warm, humid air mass moved northward from the Gulf of Mexico.
Slidell, La., reported a midday total of 0.40 inches of rain.
Temperatures ranged between the 80s and 90s across the Gulf Coast, as
Laredo, Texas, recorded a midday high of 90 degrees. The Mid-Atlantic
and Northeast stayed clear of precipitation on Tuesday.
