National Weather Summary for December 18,2013 from weatherunderground.com

Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday,December 18,2013

A winter snow storm moved away from the Northeast on Wednesday, which allowed for snow showers to taper off for most areas. However, the back side of the system allowed for lake effect snow showers to continue for downwind shores of the Great Lakes. Heavy snow showers developed over New York state as well as parts of northern Michigan. Snowfall totals ranged from 3 to 5 inches in these areas, with up to 8 inches reported at West Falls, New York and up to 12 inches at higher terrain.

Further west, another weaker trough of low pressure moved over the Northern Rockies and into the Northern Plains. This kicked up a few scattered snow showers across Montana and into the Dakotas. Meanwhile in the Pacific Northwest, moisture from the Pacific Ocean brought a few rain showers to western Oregon and Washington, with some light snow in the Cascades. In the Southwest, a trough of low pressure over southern California brought some moisture into the desert Southwest, kicking up rain showers in southern Nevada and southern Utah. Rainfall totals remained under a quarter of an inch for these areas by midday on Wednesday.
