Vietnam, China Enduring Typhoon Haiyan's Final Blow

November 10,2013; 3:10PM,EST

After devastating the Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan is now unleashing its final blow across northeastern Vietnam and southern China.
Haiyan is no longer the extremely powerful typhoon it was when it tore through the Philippines. However, Haiyan's strength is still equal to that of a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean.
Haiyan made its final landfall early Monday morning local time (Sunday afternoon EST) near Hong Gai, Vietnam.
Now onshore, Haiyan will rapidly lose its typhoon status and weaken below tropical storm strength by Tuesday.
Despite weakening, the storm will remain capable of producing flooding rain, mudslides and also stronger wind gusts.

Rainfall over parts of northeastern Vietnam into southern China will be in the 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 inches) range, and some areas may receive over 300 mm (12 inches) with this storm as it weakens over southern China through Monday night. This will likely cause some mudslides in far northern Vietnam and southern China.

Detailed Forecast for Hanoi

Tropical storm-force winds that could lead to tree damage and power outages will continue to accompany Haiyan along its path through Monday. These winds are a far cry from what occurred in the Philippines with the first landfall.
Past storms for the area have brought heavy rainfall over the past few months, and that rainfall will only help to trigger dangerous mudslides and flooding with Haiyan moving through. The worst of the flooding is likely to occur near and east of the track of the storm. Even those on Hainan could see a few heavy bands of rain with the storm off to the west.
