Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday,September 19,2013.
A pair of cold fronts caused severe weather to occur over parts of the
central and northern Plains on Thursday, while the majority of the
Eastern Seaboard experienced mild, clear conditions.
Strong to severe thunderstorms emerged over the upper Midwest on
Thursday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous hail to the
region. Parts of Minnesota experienced hail more than 2 inches in
diameter, while wind speeds were reported between 60 and 80 mph in
southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Severe thunderstorms were
also reported in northern Kansas, southern Nebraska, and southwest Iowa.
Southern Texas experienced strong thunderstorms as a result of a moist,
warm air mass being pushed in from the south.
The majority of the East Coast felt the effects of a high pressure
system on Thursday that was stationed over the Mid-Atlantic Coast. This
high pressure drew warmer air from the south, causing temperatures to
rise and clear conditions to persist. Southern Florida, as well as parts
of the Gulf Coast, experienced spotty thunderstorms earlier today.
High pressure also brought warm, clear conditions to the Great Basin on
Thursday, giving a bit more relief to the central and northern Rockies.
Along the Pacific Northwest, gusty winds began to emerge along the coast
as a cold front approached the area. Rainfall did not affect the region
on Thursday, although clouds began to emerge with the approaching cold
front. The Southwest continued to experience warm, dry conditions, as
temperatures in the California and Arizona deserts rose above 100
degrees.
