WeatherWhys for August 19,2013 from accuweather.com

The heart of the Atlantic hurricane season typically runs from mid-August through mid-September. During this time, a strong ridge of high pressure centered over the Atlantic directs tropical cyclones west and northwest over warm water. Westerly winds in the upper atmosphere that create wind shear usually retreat far to the north.
