With a cold front pushing through eastern Virginia and North Carolina Saturday afternoon, storms will continue to fire up.
While it is not a widespread threat, some of these storms may be locally severe.
The main threats will be damaging wind gusts and hail. However, storms could also produce blinding downpours, bringing a large amount of rain in a short time, potentially leading to flooding problems.
Storms moved through the Richmond early in the afternoon, producing hail up to 1-inch in diameter and wind gusts as high as 50 mph. The high winds brought down trees and caused power outages. These storms were then progressing towards Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Storms also could fire coming off the mountains in northern North Carolina, bringing some stronger storms to Greensboro and eventually Raleigh and Greenville later in the afternoon and early evening.
In addition to the severe threat, downpours will add to the already-heightened flooding risk across the area. A sluggish front over the Tennessee Valley and the Carolinas will bring continuous streams of rain and thunderstorms for the weekend.
