Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday,August 10,2013.
Wet weather activity in the Northeast tapered off through early Saturday morning as the northern portion of a cold front extending through the East moved offshore into the Atlantic Ocean. As this system departed, higher pressure began to return to the region through the afternoon with drier, less humid conditions. Breezy conditions persisted for northern New England due to the pressure gradient between high pressure centered over the Midwest and low pressure to the north. Meanwhile, the southern portion of this cold front stalled across the Mid-Atlantic into the Southern Plains during the afternoon. Sufficient moisture over the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast allowed scattered showers and thunderstorms to continue south of the frontal boundary through the afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center issued a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for areas of central and southern Virginia into northern North Carolina with possible damaging wind gusts.
Out West, monsoonal moisture spread across the Four Corners with afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Additional showers and chances of thunderstorms developed near a stationary front extending from the Northern Rockies into the Northern Plains.
