WeatherWhys for December 7,2012,from accuweather.com

If jet contrails extend a great distance across the sky, it may be a sign that the weather is about to take a turn for the worse. When contrails do not evaporate right away, the upper atmosphere must be relatively moist. This requires at least some upward motion to the air, which is typically caused by an approaching front or storm.
