A storm that took a rare early-September track across northern Africa into the Mediterranean Sea brought flooding rainfall to parts of southern Italy and the Balkan Peninsula with more heavy rainfall expected into this weekend.
Areas from Sicily through Calabria received the heaviest rainfall from Wednesday into Thursday. Rainfall amounts of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) were common with localized amounts up to 150 mm (6 inches).
The flooding was so intense across parts of Sicily that cars were seen being pulled down streets by the flood waters.

While flooding did not occur farther north, rain fell across Campania, Basilicata and Puglia where amounts were generally under 25 mm (1 inch).
The downpours then moved into northern Greece and southern Albania, before spreading northeastward across Macedonia, western Bulgaria and southern Serbia during the day on Thursday.
Rainfall amounts generally averaged 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) across these areas with localized amounts over 75 mm (3 inches).

Additional downpours are expected across northern Greece, Bulgaria and southern Romania through Saturday as the storm stalls over the region and slowly weakens.
The continued downpours will elevate the risk for flash flooding and mudslides across this region, resulting in travel delays.
Several days of tranquil weather will follow in the wake of this storm system across southern and southeast Europe.
