Typhoon Noul to Drench Japan Through Tuesday

Despite weakening significantly, moisture from Typhoon Noul will spread northward, causing tropical downpours in central and southern Japan through Tuesday night.
This tropical moisture will be pulled to the north along a cold front that is in the process of sweeping across Japan. Several inches of rain, along with a gusty wind, will target areas from Kyushu and Shikoku into Honshu.
South Korea will also experience locally heavy rain through Monday night before drier weather returns on Tuesday.
Noul already produced flooding rain and damaging wind across parts of the northern Philippines over the weekend.

The center of Noul is expected to pass just to the southeast of Japan which will keep most of the strong winds offshore. However, southern Japan, including the Ryukyu Islands, will have to contend with strong winds.
These areas are expected to endure wind gusts up to 65-80 kph (40-50 mph). This is enough to cause downed trees and minor power outages, but not strong enough to cause damage to homes and businesses.
Rain will increase across Kyushu and Shikoku Monday night. Central and northern Japan will get rainfall on Tuesday and Tuesday night. The heaviest rainfall is expected over Honshu; however, a soaking rain will fall over Hokkaido.

Rainfall will average 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) in many areas across southern Japan and South Korea. Nagasaki, Osaka and Nagoya will be a few cities to get a soaking rainfall. Heavier rain will fall in the mountains with locally 150 mm (6 inches) of rain expected.
This rain will fall heavily and within a short period of time, leading to a rapid rise in streams and rivers. The threat for flash flooding will continue into Tuesday night.

Tokyo will get some rain from Tuesday into Tuesday night, the steadiest of which will fall later in the day on Tuesday into the first half of Tuesday night. Rainfall could be heavy for a brief time leading to travel delays. In addition to the rain, there will be breezy conditions with gusts as high as 50 mph near Tokyo Bay.
As rain spreads to the north and east on Tuesday, areas that got rain on Monday, such as Nagasaki, will dry out. High pressure building across the country will lead to a largely dry day on Wednesday, though a few showers will remain in Hokkaido.
