Subtropical
Storm Ana is making for rough conditions in South Carolina, prompting a
water rescue off the Charleston Jetties Thursday.
A man and woman
were stranded after hazardous weather thrust their vessel onto the
rocks of the Jetties, piercing their vessel’s hull and filling the craft
with water, WCSC-TV reported. Coast Guard Station Charleston dispatched
air and boat crews, who successfully rescued the vessel’s occupants. No
one was injured.
"A surface low pressure system developed off of
the eastern coast of Florida this week," said weather.com meteorologist
Chrissy Warrilow. "That surface low is forecast to strengthen as it
moves northwest towards the South Carolina coast this weekend. People
with interests along the Georgia to North Carolina coastline should be
prepared for strong winds as well as rough surf."

The
coastal system will provide for the potential of rip currents, and
lifeguards began training for rip current rescues in Folly Beach, South
Carolina, Wednesday.
Rough waves and strong winds provided the
perfect backdrop for practicing rescue situations. Luke Meier, a
lifeguard with Charleston County Parks, told WCSC-TV, “It’s pretty
choppy and messy out there, so we want to get everyone’s minds ready,
and we want them thinking clearly in a rescue situation.”
In
advance of the storm, residents should prepare with the following
procedures and items Dr. Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane
Center, provided local media: “Evacuation, supplies, insurance and
strengthening your home.”
