New England Snow on Winter's Final Weekend (FORECAST)

By March, only the avid skier, snowboarder or student looking for more snow days wants more snow, particularly in New England during one of the snowiest seasons on record.

Current Radar
After finally getting a warmer tease this week, more snow is on the way for parts of the Northeast during the final weekend of winter. Our apologies. We're only the messengers here.

The Ingredients

A plume of fairly deep and moist air along with a weakening upper-level low-pressure system is pushing northeastward from the southern U.S.
This moisture will join forces with cold air  – by "cold" we mean air at or below freezing near the ground – lingering over parts of the Northeast. In addition, fresh cold air will be arriving from the Great Lakes, ushered in by a dip in the jet stream.
This arriving dip in the jet stream, together with low pressure moving into the Gulf of Maine or near Nova Scotia, will allow snow, and some wind, to persist in parts of New England and Upstate New York through Sunday.

Sunday's Forecast

Snowfall Forecast

The Forecast

- Overnight-Sunday: A vigorous jet stream dips in, bringing deeper, colder air into at least parts of the Northeast and interacts with a lagging offshore low. Snow may be heavy over parts of northern New England. This could be accompanied by strong winds. Rain may change to snow across parts of New York and southern New England for a time before the precipitation ends later Sunday evening.
Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories have been issued for parts of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont where snow will likely accumulate and visibilities will be low at times due to the snow and gusty winds. There is also the risk of scattered power outages, mainly in parts of Maine and northern New Hampshire, due to the heavy wet snow.
Here is our general outlook:
Best chance of 6 inches or more of snow: Parts of Maine, northern New Hampshire, far northeast Vermont
- Some accumulating snow: Western and northern New York, Vermont, southern New Hampshire, Massachusetts.
Little or no accumulating snow: I-95 corridor from NYC metro southward.
(FORECASTS: Boston | Bangor, Maine | Albany, New York)
Note that precipitation will fall as rain for a time across parts of the heavy southern New England snowpack.
However, the warm sector of this system will move along quickly enough to minimize what otherwise might be a threat of flooding from melting snow and rain.
