Snow Flurries Sweep into Jacksonville, Florida

January 8,2015

The blast of Arctic air sweeping across the central and eastern United States has had an unusual effect on Florida, and we are not just talking about cold temperatures.
Snow flurries were reported in the Jacksonville area early Thursday afternoon. Moisture from the Atlantic Ocean combined with temperatures in the the 30s helped get the flakes flying in the air.
According to meteorologist Mike Seidel, the last time Jacksonville reported a trace of snow was Dec. 26, 2010. Before that, you have to go back to Dec. 22, 1995.
The First Coast took it all in stride, even coming up with a pithy Twitter hashtag #duvalblizzard. The Jacksonville Jaguars were even on board (obviously the photo was not taken today).
While Florida was admittedly chilly, much of the South, Midwest and East were stuck in the coldest air since 2014's so-called "Polar Vortex." It was so cold in Chicago Thursday morning, meteorologist Mike Bettes made popsicles outdoors during his reports for The Weather Channel.
The worst of the cold air will pull away from the Sunshine State and the rest of the Deep South by the weekend.
