Newborn Found Abandoned Outside Alabama Home On Cold Night

January 7,2015

A baby just a few hours old was found outside an Alabama home Tuesday night, just as the beginning of a widespread arctic cold blast started making its way into the Deep South.
According to the Alabama news website AL.com, the newborn was discovered outside a home in Jefferson County.
A couple inside the home told police a young female neighbor knocked on their door around 8 p.m., saying she’d heard a baby crying in their yard. The couple reportedly took the child inside their home, frightened the cold weather would take a toll, al.com reports.
The temperature around 8 p.m. Tuesday was 42 degrees and dropping. The winds made it feel like 38 outdoors, according to weather.com senior meteorologist Nick Wiltgen.
“Too warm for frostbite, but definitely a hypothermia concern for a newborn baby,” Wiltgen explained.

Police later identified the young neighbor as the child’s mother.
My Fox Alabama said the baby had been outside for about two hours wrapped in a towel and wearing only a short-sleeve onesie. The TV station reports the girl delivered the child around 4 p.m. and then left it on the ground near her neighbors’ door when her parents got home around 6 p.m.; she had allegedly hidden her pregnancy.
The baby is reportedly in good condition at a nearby hospital. Police said the young woman will likely face charges since she initially lied to investigators.
The worst of the unusually frigid temperatures are forecast to hit Alabama Thursday morning, where temperatures will be in the teens, with wind chills even colder. Warming centers are open in several counties for anyone stuck in the cold or loses heat.
