Flooding Downpours to Track Across Australia, May Bring Fire Relief

A tropical area of low pressure will continue to bring the threat of heavy rainfall to a large part of Australia through this weekend.
This low will interact with a dip in the jet stream over central Australia resulting in copious amounts of tropical moisture pumping from the Kimberly Coast across the interior of Australia to well ahead of the low to parts of South Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales.
The tropical surge will fuel daily showers and thunderstorms within this zone, leading to localized flash flooding along with washed-out roads and railways.
Daily rainfall amounts of 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) are possible with the heaviest rainfall departing Western Australia by the weekend and becoming more concentrated across the southeastern part of the nation.

While much of the area from northern Western Australia through southern Northern Territory is sparsely populated, mining and oil production in the region could be impacted by the stormy weather.
Widespread damaging winds are not expected, but gusts of 65-80 kph (40-50 mph) can still occur within some thunderstorms.

A potential benefit of the rain is that it could aid firefighting efforts as one of the worst outbreaks of wildfires in decades continues across South Australia.
Localized rainfall may surpass 50 mm (2 inches) from South Australia into Victoria, including the cities of Adelaide and Melbourne.

For those following from overseas, it appears that South Australia is about to transition from “on fire” to “flooded” - in a serious way.
