Snow and Cold to Oust Warmth in the Upper Midwest

December 13,2014; 10:25PM,EST

The first half of December has been relatively dry for much of the Upper Midwest, but a change is in store by the end of the weekend.
After a brief December warmup, conditions will change rapidly for cities from Omaha to Minneapolis.
The storm bringing snow to Denver and the Intermountain West over the weekend will track into the Great Lakes and spread a swath of snow from Nebraska through Minnesota.
Snow is expected to begin across western Nebraska on Sunday night and then gradually spread north and west through much of the Dakotas on Monday and into Minnesota on Monday night into Tuesday.

"While there will be an area of rain mixing with snow on the southern edge, ice is not expected to be a major threat with this storm," said Accuweather Meteorologist Steve Travis. Regardless, the commute on Tuesday morning will be tricky for some people, especially in Minneapolis, where snow will be winding down.
Cold air will be rushing in quickly behind the departing storm on Monday night into Tuesday. While temperatures will feel much colder compared with the warmth of the weekend, they will actually be near seasonable for the middle of December.
Winds gusting out of the northwest at 15-25 mph will combine with the chillier air to bring the RealFeel® down into the single digits for cities like Minneapolis, Fargo and Duluth.

This cold air mass looks to gradually shift into the Northeast. The more mild spell will be ended by Wednesday for cities like Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, with high temperatures expected to be 10-15 degrees colder than the high on Tuesday.
Interior portions of the Northeast are likely to see some snow showers on Wednesday, while a mix of rain and snow is expected closer to the coast.
